There's nothing worse than bare soil, especially as without any covering the minerals and goodness will fade over time. To try and combat this I'm going to try and put a green manure winter mix down, this grows quickly and can be chopped directly into the soil next year to improve it.
If you want do this then you could try what I've done with my unused beds and cover them with membrane and weigh it down to keep the soil warmer to encourage worms and such and also prevent any weeds over winter.
Time will tell if this works.
